CONNAH'S QUAY NOMADS' rising stars followed the lead of their senior team as they won two of their three Welsh Academy Cup finals.

Having seen Andy Morrison's first team beat Aberystwyth 4-1 at Latham Park on Sunday, it was the turn of the Under-12s, U-14s and U-16s a day later.

The U-12s, led by coaches Jordan Mapp-Jones and Leighton Sumner, led the way in Newtown on Monday by securing a 6-5 penalty shoot-out success over Penybont after the final had finished all-square at 1-1, Noah Sumner with the goal.

Liam Jones, Corey Anderton, Sumner, Louis O'Carrol and Connor Parry converted their spot-kicks for Nomads, before Jack Coll settled the final in the Flintshire side's favour.

Mapp-Jones tweeted his delight at a memorable win, writing: "Proud of @the_nomads 12’s today winning Welsh Academy Cup in Newtown! It was a really tough game against a good @Penybont_FC side!

"What a season it has been for @the_nomads academy! All the hard work came together over this weekend!"

Matt Griffiths and Dale Johnson's U-14s were next on the podium to pick up the trophy after they overcame Afan Lido 1-0 courtesy of a strike by Liam Moss.

Coach Griffiths expressed his pleasure at being part of a fantastic weekend for the club, saying: "What a way to end a fantastic season! Tough conditions with the heat but the lads were brilliant against a very strong Afan Lido winners of the south league.

"Myself and Dale Johnson are really proud of this very talented group who have worked extremely hard all season to get their reward.

"It was a brilliant weekend for the club. The first team won the welsh cup for the first time in history, the U-12s and U-14s are national champions and the U-16s national finalists.

"Everyone associated with the club has worked hard to make this happen."

The U-16s were unable to make it a clean sweep of victories in Newtown as they slipped to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Cambrian & Clydach Vale, although that doesn't detract from the club's achievements.

Director of football Jay Catton tweeted: "What a weekend for all at @the_nomads. For the first time ever in Welsh history a club has had all four sides in Welsh Cup Finals at U-12s, U-14s, U-16s and first team level.

"To then have three national winners and one finalist is a historic achievement by all."
