Holywell Town missing out on a Cymru Alliance runners-up place will not detract from a 'brilliant' season, according to John Haseldin.

The Wellmen lost 3-2 to Denbigh Town in midweek in Haseldin's final home game in charge, a result which saw Denbigh consolidate a top-two finish.

Shaun Tuck gave the hosts a deserved 14th minute lead before Denbigh equalised through Danny Sullivan and then took the lead courtesy of a dubious penalty dispatched by Kristian Pierce.

Holywell were level immediately after the restart when Tuck converted his second of the game, but Matt Worrall's 74th minute strike proved decisive as Denbigh secured their highest ever league placing.

Aggrieved at the decisions against his team and overseeing successive defeats for the first time this season, Haseldin admitted to mixed feelings on an emotional night at Halkyn Road.

He said: "Obviously that result hasn't gone our way and we've been penalised by a ridiculous decision from the referee to award a penalty, which was a bit of a disgrace really.

"It's the second week in a row that we've had a dodgy decision against us, but we had so many chances to win the game that we really should have put a few more away than we did.

"To have put so much into the season and then to fall a bit short in the final stretch is tough to take, but we've given it everything.

"I think our fans know that and there was a hardcore group of them who were there at the end to give me a great reception.

"They've been with us through thick and thin throughout my time with the club and it's meant the world to me for them to show their support to me and the players."

With a third-place finish still attainable and a Newfa Cup semi-final against Airbus still to come, the Wellmen still have a vested interest in the season.

And Haseldin insists that only a victory at Penrhyncoch on Saturday will do they look to better their successive fifth-place finishes in the division.

"It's not a goodbye from me to the supporters just yet - there's still a bit of football to play" he added.

"If we we can pick up two away wins in the league, this will still have been a brilliant season for us.

"Penryhncoch away is always a tough game, but it's the type of fixture we need to be winning to get where we want to be.

"We've still got work to do and I know the players we have here will continue working as hard as they have all season for me.
