You know you’ve had a good start to the season when the chief concern is that your home pitch is too good.

And that’s exactly the main worry for Northop Hall captain Dave Kennedy ahead of tomorrow’s Liverpool Competition Division Two clash with visiting Maghull.

Kennedy is impressed with the work done to Smithy Lane by the club’s groundsmen, but is slightly concerned that his side might find home wins hard to come by.

On his side’s chances of beating Maghull to maintain their promotion push, Kennedy explained: “There is a danger that, because the pitch is extremely good, half the battle will be bowling sides out on it.

“The groundsmen have done a fantastic job, but we will have to bowl very well.”

Securing the services of an overseas professional would help Hall’s victory cause, but Dario Seale’s planned arrival at Smithy Lane could be shelved.

The West Indian quick is yet to finalise a move to Hall, who have until the end of this month to secure the services of an overseas players.

“We have to get someone in and get them playing before the end of May,” said Kennedy. “We might have to look elsewhere if we can’t sort out Dario’s move.

“I’ve got some irons in the fire because we can’t keep waiting. Ideally we will get an answer before this weekend.”

Maghull have tied, drawn and lost their three matches this season, but in Australian batsman Jonathan Ring they have a man in top form.

Ring has scored 220 runs, including one ton and one half century, leading Kennedy to say: “We’ve got to get him out before he scores too many.”

Hall, who have been forced to concede their Ray Tyler Cup tie at Birkenhead Park due to fixture congestion, will have Josh Andrady and Matty Hodgson available with Karl Evans and Jamie Hodgson out.

Hall second XI have a double-header this weekend as they make their way to Newton-le-Willows Seconds tomorrow before heading to Liverpool Seconds on Sunday.

Tonight sees the club’s new-look Under-18s face Tattenhall on the back of a last over defeat to Chester Boughton Hall.
