Talented centre-back James Jones has left Chester FC to join National League side Salford City.

The 19-year-old was offered a new contract by the Blues after his one-year deal expired at the end of last season, but has opted to make the move to Salford, citing the fact he wanted to remain in full-time football, which will now be assured with Graham Alexander’s newly-promoted National League outfit. Salford will pay Chester an undisclosed fee for the teenager.

The academy graduate leaves behind a Blues side now managed by former Salford duo Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley, who are building a squad they hope can challenge for promotion having been relegated from the National League last term.

Johnson and Morley signed Salford midfielder Scott Burton earlier this week on a free after Salford agreed to release the 30-year-old from his contract, in exchange for securing a deal for highly-rated Jones, who hails from Shrewsbury.

Defender Jones, who recently attended Jamie Vardy’s V9 Academy, made 15 appearances for Chester last season having broken into the side in September and his good run of form earned him an England C call-up.

Johnson confirmed Jones had expressed his wish to join a full-time club, and admitted it was a ‘good deal’ for all parties.

“At the end of the day, it’s the best deal possible for the player and the club,” he added.

“A deal where we get Scott Burton, plus cash from Salford, in exchange for James Jones, is a good deal for us. We have ensured there’s a good sell-on clause in there too so the club benefits from any future success James enjoys.

“He wanted full-time football and we have no problem with that. He was always clear of his intentions and has certainly not led us up the garden path.

“James hopefully has a good future in the game and we wish him well.”
