Chester FC have secured the signing of midfielder Scott Burton from Salford City.

Burton has penned a one-year deal with the Blues, having played a key role in Salford’s National League North title-winning campaign under Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley, who have since taken charge at the Deva.

He made 125 appearances for the Ammies over three seasons, scoring four times, and collected the club’s Players’ Player of the Year award in 2016/17.

“Scott is a combative midfielder, he’ll be our engine room and he’s a box-to-box type midfielder,” Blues co-boss Johnson said.

“He’s spent five seasons with me and Bern, we had him at Ramsbottom and took him to Salford where he’s been a key part of what we’ve been able to achieve.

“We had a 70 per cent win ratio with Scott in the team and that dropped quite a bit without him. It’s only a stat but it shows his importance to the team.

“He doesn’t score 15 goals a season, but he’s a real leader and we spoke about getting leaders in, a real midfield general. The Chester fans should warm to him.

“Southport offered more money than us to try and get him, about twice as much, but Scott made his mind up and wanted to come here.

“To come to Chester on around 50 per cent of what he was on, it shows how much he wanted to come here and we’re delighted to get him over the line.”
