DEAN SAUNDERS wants a repeat of Wrexham’s excellent performance against Altrincham in January when the sides meet at The Racecourse tonight.

Wrexham, who had previously been knocked out of the FA Trophy by Altrincham following a replay, won the league encounter 3-1 at Moss Lane on January 30 and Saunders is looking for the same outcome tonight.

“Altrincham are a good team who will play five at the back and sit back, and are hard to play against,” said Saunders.

“And they will try and catch you on the break so you have to be patient.
“Altrincham got a good result [1-1 draw] at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday and are doing well in the league.

“We have got to go out and play well. And if we play like we did at Altrincham, I would take that every day and we can win. I thought we were excellent there and scored some good goals.”

Wrexham paid the price for missing numerous scoring chances against Ebbsfleet on Saturday, eventually having to settle for a 1-1 draw.

“I counted 16 clear cut chances,” said Saunders. You don’t expect them all to go in but you have got to punish teams.

“We can’t feel sorry for ourselves for missing chances, we’ve got to put it behind us and go and beat Altrincham.”

Still 12th in the revised Blue Square Premier table - adjusted now Chester City’s results have been expunged - Wrexham find themselves 16 points adrift of Luton Town who occupy the final play-off berth, although the Reds have one game in hand.

But Saunders has not given up on the goal of securing a place in the top-five.
“We have got to believe we can do it. We have got to try and win tonight and take it from there,” said Saunders.

“I know we are capable of it. I still think we can win a sequence of games in a row, although we have not done it yet this season.

“We can still do it and this group of players are not far short of what is required. We have a defence that is not leaking goals and we are creating chances.

“I just feel we are two or three players from where I want us to be.”
