Wrexham held to stalemate with Tamworth

DEAN SAUNDERS rued Wrexham’s inability to break down a stubborn Tamworth side at The Racecourse last night.

After creating little in front of goal, Wrexham were unable to take the half chances that did come their way as they were held to a goalless draw.

And while he praised Tamworth for their resolute defending, Saunders still felt Wrexham could go on and break the deadlock in the second half.

“That is nine games that Tamworth have gone unbeaten, they beat Stevenage Borough at the weekend and have also beaten Oxford and Mansfield,” said Saunders.

“The way they are set up, with a 4-5-1 formation, they are very difficult to play against and defensively they looked solid.

“I didn’t think they would be able to keep defending the way they were. At half-time, I thought that we would overpower them.

“But we defended well too, we never did enough probably in front of goal. It was a disappointing result for us but I can’t criticise the defenders really or the goalkeeper.

“I thought Andy Fleming played well in the middle, but the half-chances we had – Wes Baynes had a good one – didn’t go in.

“I said to them, I think Chelsea won 13 games 1-0. We get edgier and edgier and if it is 0-0 at half-time it is like a disaster.

“Obviously Andy Mangan and Wes Baynes never got a goal tonight, which I was expecting in the second half, but on we go.

“We have to plough on and try and beat Chester City on Sunday.”

However, it remains to be seen if Sunday’s derby at The Deva Stadium will go ahead as Chester failed to fulfil their fixture at Forest Green Rovers last night.
