Obi frustrated by Wrexham FC's big freeze

NO-ONE is more disappointed than Obi Anoruo by Wrexham’s recent spate of postponements.

With Wrexham averaging less than a goal a game in the first half of the season, the 18-year-old striker was recalled from a loan spell at Welsh Premier League outfit Newtown by Reds’ boss Dean Saunders last month.

Anoruo was set to make his first Wrexham appearance of the season in the home clash against Mansfield on December 19 but that game was called-off because of a frozen pitch.

And with the following four matches also falling victim to the weather – yesterday’s clash at AFC Wimbledon the latest game to be postponed – a disappointed Anoruo has had to wait for his chance.

But he is keeping his fingers crossed that he is still in Saunders’ plans.

“It has been very frustrating, especially as I have not had my chance yet,” said Anoruo. “Hopefully when the time comes, I can take it.

“I have always believed that for every disappointment, there is a blessing in disguise. So we will have to see what I can make out of it.

“I am looking forward to getting my chance, and I really hope I am still in the manager’s plans.

“I just hope the weather improves and I get the opportunity to show what I can do.

Hopefully it will be at home so I can play in front of the Wrexham fans, but I was hoping the game at AFC Wimbledon would be on.”

Having made his first team debut in the FA Cup replay defeat at Eastwood last season, Anoruo went on to score two goals when he was given another opportunity by Saunders later in the campaign.

And the young striker is hoping to find the net when he finally gets his chance this term: “I got two goals last season so hopefully I can go on and repeat that,” he said.

“I am here till June but am hoping I get a new contract by the summer so I will work hard and hopefully get more goals.”

Admitting that he had enjoyed his temporary spell at Newtown where he boasted a decent scoring record, Anoruo added: “It was a good experience and I think I got five goals in nine games.

“I enjoyed working with the manager Darren Ryan who was really sound, and I had a good time there."

Wrexham have only scored 21 goals in 22 Blue Square Premier outings this season and Saunders is hoping to sign a new striker during the transfer window.

Having struggled to find the back of the net in the opening half of the campaign, Saunders believes his current crop of players should be doing a lot better with the scoring chances that are being created.

“We finished the last league game very well at York on December 5, although it has been a long time ago,” said Saunders. “We have got to put in the same kind of performance but have to be more ruthless in front of goal.

“We can talk about it and talk about it but the players have got to go and do it.

“They have got to get into good positions because with the amount of chances we have created they are there for the taking.”

As a result of their recent inactivity, Wrexham have played less games than any other side in the division and have five matches in hand on some teams.

Wrexham last played a competitive match on December 15 when they lost at Altrincham in the FA Trophy but despite a fixture backlog, Saunders looked at the positives and remarked that his new signings this month will be involved in plenty of matches.

“That is one good thing and it has also given a few injured players time to recover. Marc Williams has not missed a game yet,” said Saunders.

Saunders also reacted to calls for a winter break to be inserted into the football calender.

“It is brought up when things like this happen,” he added. “But very few games in the Premiership or Championship have been called off.

“We are looking at getting covers for our pitch but three of the games postponed are away from home and we can’t do anything about that.

“You just have to get on with it.”
