Frustrating Christmas for Wrexham FC

IT was a frustrating Christmas period for Wrexham FC as another game fell victim to the weather.

A second successive home match was postponed on Boxing Day when Wrexham’s clash against Altrincham was called off because of a frozen Racecourse pitch.

And Monday's trip to Gateshead was postponed because of a frozen pitch at The International Stadium, the third consecutive match that Wrexham have had called off.

Wrexham FC groundsman Paul Chalonor believes altering part of the Mold Road Stand roof is the answer to The Racecourse's problems.

The snow that arrived on Wednesday was left on the pitch until the day of the game to protect the surface from an overnight frost.

However, when head groundsman Chaloner, assistant Kevin Jones and a gathering of supporters began to move the snow on Saturday morning, parts of the pitch in front of the Mold Road Stand were still frozen.

That part of the pitch received less sunlight because of the size of the stand and Chaloner admitted that was a recurring problem that might need addressing.

“We have not really been able to get on the pitch so this was the first proper chance we have had,” said Chaloner.

“We left the snow on because of an overnight frost. It gave the pitch more of a blanket by covering it up. It gave minus three overnight so it would have been pointless taking it off and then getting a frost in the pitch.

“Then it would have been off anyway so we just tried to protect it. We started moving the snow off in the morning and it was soft underneath.

“It was just whether we could get it off in time. I would like to thank the supporters who turned up to help us. There must have been 20-odd on there and I was chuffed they turned up.

“But then went we got more into the pitch, there were still a few hard patches of frost on the far side which the referee was concerned about really.

“That Mold Road stand is not helping us at all so we might have to look into something, try and improve that side some way in the future.”
