Belief the key says Wrexham FC boss

DEAN SAUNDERS insists his players have got to have a belief that they will score goals.

Wrexham go into tonight’s clash against Kidderminster Harriers at The Racecourse with Saunders looking for goals to be contributed from throughout the team, and not just the strikers.

And Saunders said his players must have confidence they will find the back of the net.

“Wide men have to get ten a season and midfielders eight to ten,” said Saunders.

“If they keep getting in there, we will hit four or five soon when all the chances go in.

“We have got to start getting on the end of set-plays. People have got to be going in there confident they are going to score – not hoping they will score.

“We are making chances every game and we need goals from everywhere.”

Saunders knows the amount of goals scored is a problem that needs addressing sooner rather than later but he believes Wrexham will get it right: “Normally you have 20 clean sheets and win the league or are in the play-offs,” he said.

“We have got 11 already but I am as frustrated as everyone that we are not scoring enough goals.

“I am not telling people not to shoot or get into the box, we are working on it every day.

“We have missed bagfuls of chances. We have lost once in eight games and I am pleased with that side, we will eventually get the scoring sorted.

“If you keep the ball out, you are always going to have a chance but I want to see us scoring more goals.”

This time last year, Wrexham lost their first league game under Saunders, ironically at tonight’s opponents Kidderminster, before embarking on a ten game unbeaten run in the league.

And Saunders is looking for a repeat of that from the Reds. “We are making progress. If we win the next two games, if you look at the table it will be completely different,” he added. “If we go on a similar type of run to the one we had this time last season, we will be knocking on the door.

“At the moment we are on a good run, but we have got to put a performance in at home. Not all the fans see our away performances.”

Saunders is forced into one change tonight as centre-back Mansour Assoumani, Wrexham’s last remaining ever-present, picked up a fifth yellow card of the season and will serve a one-match ban.

Either Ashley Westwood or Mike Williams, the two full-backs at Histon on Saturday, will partner Frank Sinclair in the heart of defence.

Striker Lamine Sakho is also suspended and right-sided Silvio Spann is out with a hamstring problem.

Meanwhile, Wrexham have been drawn at home to fellow Blue Square Premier outfit Altrincham in the first round of the FA Trophy, with the tie at The Racecourse due to take place on Saturday, December 12.
