WREXHAM'S League Two promotion-winning campaign ended with a 2-1 victory against champions Stockport County at The Racecourse to secure runners-up spot.

Phil Parkinson's men secured a top-three finish with two games to spare and registered a fifth win in a row over their rivals on the final day.

The Hatters, who will join Wrexham in League One next season, took a first half-lead but the Reds equalised two minutes after the break through Ollie Palmer's eighth goal of 2023-24 and in-form midfielder Andy Cannon sealed success late on.

Wrexham took runners-up spot ahead of Mansfield who drew 1-1 at Barrow but all that matters is back-to-back promotions for the first time in the club's history.

Although a place in the third tier was already secured a fortnight earlier, Parkinson resisted temptation to change a winning team and he named the same side that started the 3-0 win at Crewe the previous weekend.

Wrexham gave the champions a guard of honour when the teams walked out but that's where the niceties ended.

The Reds had the first chance in the ninth minute when Tom O'Connor's long ball fell for Palmer and advantage was played after Paul Mullin was bundled over by a defender but the striker fired over from outside the area.

Good build-up play led to an even better chance when O'Connor fed Mullin who took a touch before only just clearing the bar with his effort.

Although Stockport were getting into some good positions they were given a let-off when Ben Hinchliffe raced out of area to head clear, the ball came out to Cannon who eventually got control but could only find the arms of the relieved goalkeeper who got back into the six-yard box to claim.

There was another opening when James McClean took a quickly taken throw-in and O'Connor's low drive across goal just needed a touch from a team-mate.

But Stockport took the lead after 29 minutes.

Wrexham lost possession and Callum Clamps found Connor Lemonheigh Evans whose low shot went in off the far post.

It should have been 2-0 when Antoni Sarcevic was put through on goal but the midfielder fired wide with only Arthur Okonkwo to beat.

Back came Wrexham and Elliot Lee delivered a superb pass to O'Connor who got in behind the defence but didn't get enough on his shot and it was easily saved by Hinchliffe.

Stockport came close when Sarcevic's curling free-kick landed narrowly wide but Wrexham almost equalised with their best chance of the first half just before the break.

Andy Cannon drove forward and played in Luke Young who beat a defender and laid off to Palmer with the striker bringing a superb save out of Hinchliffe from inside the area.

But Wrexham equalised two minutes into the second period.

Eoghan O'Connell played a superb through ball to Palmer was one-on-one and he took a touch before firing past Hinchliffe.

There was a chance at the other end when Lemonheigh-Evans sent in a dangerous cross but Paddy Madden headed wide while a Camps low drive was only just off target.

McClean's effort was comfortably saved by Hinchliffe for Wrexham who went 2-1 up with two minutes to go.

Good approach play down the right ended with the ball being played to Cannon who found the back of the net with a rocket shot that gave Hinchliffe no chance.

Substitute Jack Marriott fired wide late-on but Wrexham ended another brilliant season on a high note with another win.
