THERE’S been a four-midable showing from a Flintshire club - and fighters will be heading south this weekend looking to become national champions.

Mold Boxing Club had five fighters competing in the opening stages of the Welsh novice championship last weekend and four of them have made it all the way through to the final stages of the event.

Plas Madoc Leisure Centre, in Acrefair, played host to the preliminary round and quarter-finals of the championships, when hundreds of boxers from across the country took part.

The Mold team is captained by Ryan Mahon, who has progressed in his senior 63.5kg class.

A post on the club’s Facebook page read: “Amazing job, Mold ABC Boxing Club! 4 lads advancing to the semi/finals... with unanimous decision victories!”

The successful fighters will now head to compete in the semi-finals and finals at Ebbw Vale Leisure Centre this Saturday and Sunday, February 24 and 25.

Joining Mahon in Ebbw Vale will be Lewis Renee-Smith, Ethan Edwards and Rhys Evans.

Mold Boxing Club’s Mike Phillips has been reflecting on the amazing development of the boxers.

He said: “We opened the doors for the boxing club on July 17, 2023, just seven months ago, so for the boxers from Mold to be just competing in this amount of time alone is out of this world, but to be competing to be champions of Wales is like a fairytale.

“These boxers have dedicated themselves every single day and have bought into the ideology of the club and believe in the methods we put across, the mix of the hard work and boxing education is showing to be successful and that’s down to the mentality of the boxers - mentality monsters - and credit to them for how hard they work every single day. It’s a pleasure to work with them.”

Wrexham Boxing Club also enjoyed great success during the weekend, with four boxers now heading south looking to claim titles.

Jack Williams and Rhys Jones are both through to their respective finals, while Lloyd Davies and Jake Jones have semi-final bouts to look forward to.

Two out of three ain’t bad from the perspective of Clwyd ABC.

Archie Chatterton is through to the last-four in his junior 50kg section.

Chatterton progressed with a first round stoppage after one minute and seven seconds of his bout.

This was just one second slower than his clubmate Harry Bubb, who also successfully made it through. Bubb triumphed with a first round stoppage in the junior 63kg category.

However, there was no joy for Clwyd’s Jamie Arnold, who lost out unanimously in the ring.

Deva's Rory Shawcross and Lewis McKiernon were also in action in Plas Madoc, where they were just pipped on points.

Maelor ABC’s Butch Jones hailed the event and he said: “Good tournament this weekend at Plas Madoc leisure over 100 bouts over two days.

“Two sessions per day both days. It was a sell out with boxing clubs from all over Wales competing and with hundreds of visitors attending and putting Wrexham, Cefn Mawr and Plas Madoc on the map.

“The WABA was very pleased with the venue and support from all over Wales.

Hopefully we’ll make it an annual event.”

Clwyd ABC’s Samson Lowry is also heading south this weekend to join up with the national squad in Cardiff.
