THE cross-country season proved to be a successful one for North East Wales athletes.

Prizes have been picked up by Deeside AAC members over the course of the North Wales cross-country league campaign.

There was an exciting final fixture of the league season at Oswestry, which followed earlier fixtures at Bangor (October), Shrewsbury (November) and Dolgellau (January).

In the junior races, the U11 boys’ series saw a runaway win for Isacc Martin, whilst in the U11 girls’ section, sisters Gwen and Ella Hayes finished second and third respectively.

Continuing the success stories, there was a Deeside one-two in the U13 boys’ class, where Elliot Rowe finished ahead of Finley Potter.

There was a runner-up spot for Elis Martin in the U15 boys’ class, with Alfie Evans and Zac Campbell being tied for third, while Heather Watson won the U15 girls’ category.

Over in the senior races, Jacob Welsh took the men’s U17 title and there was also success for the club’s senior ladies.

Last season, they won the league title for the first time in the club’s 50-year history and they successfully defended their crown.

This feat was assisted by several excellent series results, including Martha Owen being the first senior lady and the joint overall first female.

Third senior lady was Liv Ashton, while Neisha Roberts was the first U20 lady and Evie Watts was the second U17 lady.

They were joined in delivering exceptional performances at a number of the fixtures by Abbie Doherty, Josie Hirst, Eden O’ Dea, Briony Hibbert and Michelle Arrowsmith.

Meanwhile, after delivering outstanding performances in the Cardiff and Liverpool legs respectively of the British Cross Challenge, Martha Owen (senior ladies) and Abbie Doherty (U17 ladies) gained selection to represent Wales at the London Cross Challenge, which was held at Parliament Hill.

A new Welsh record of 12.53m saw her claim the British triple jump title, while she is also the British long jump champion.

Competing against senior ladies in the Welsh championships, she won silver in the triple jump and set a new personal best in the 60m.

Scrimshaw is the UK number one for both triple and long jump in her age group.
