ALEC MUDIMU played a key role as Zimbabwe pulled off a memorable 2-1 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying victory over DR Congo.

Cefn Druids ace Mudimu slotted into the centre of defence and helped keep the likes of former Chelsea attacker Gael Kakuta quiet as Zimbabwe opened up a three-point lead at the top of Group G.

Ronald Pfumbidzai and Knowledge Musona scored either side of the break for Zimbabwe, before substitute Yannick Bolasie netted an injury time consolation.

The two teams will go head-to-head again on Tuesday in Harare where Mudimu is likely to line up in defence, alongside Nottingham Forest full-back Tendayi Darikwa.

The 26-year-old made his competitive debut for Zimbabwe after finally being cleared to play, the right-back completing 90 minutes.

Darikwa tweeted his delight at the win, writing: "Be proud. See you all on Tuesday."

Bolasie, on-loan at Aston Villa from Everton, and Stoke City striker Benik Afobe could start for DR Congo on Tuesday, but Zimbabwe boss Sunday Chidzambwe isn't fazed.

He said: "They may have many players based in Europe, but the bottom line is that 11 players from DRC are playing 11 from Zimbabwe, so we will start from there."
