JAY CATTON hailed Connah's Quay Nomads' "immense" playing staff after they ended a hectic six days with a 3-1 home success over Newtown.

Jay Owen needed just 49 seconds to half-volley Nomads into the lead, which they extended through Ryan Wignall and Callum Morris, before Luke Boundford netted a stoppage time consolation.

It was an impressive end to a six days, which included a 1-0 Scottish Challenge Cup success in Falkirk and a midweek clash with Caernarfon.

Director of football Catton said: "It was a fantastic win. The performance was great.

"Three games in six days was always going to be a challenge.

"To play the standard of opposition we did in Newtown was always going to be an unbelievable challenge with the quality of team they've got and the quality of squad they've got.

"If you look at their bench, it's a top six squad and to come away with a 3-1 win after the challenges we've had over the last six days was very pleasing.

"It's been a very, very tough week. You can't underestimate how difficult three games in six days is, with the travelling to Scotland, with a number of semi-professional players, playing Tuesday and Friday and training Monday and Thursday.

"To have two victories is a testament to the players, who have been immense."

Midfielder Owen got Nomads off the the perfect start in their quest for three points, earning the praise of Catton as a result.

"Credit to Jay Owen," said Catton. "People will look at that and won't see the detail behind the goal. They won't see the organisation from the set-play, the anticipation from Jay and then the technique - he's a very gifted footballer.

"A lot of the attributes Jay Owen has may go unrecognised in the league, but we recognise it."

The New Saints remained three points clear at the top of the table following a 2-0 success at Llanelli.

Aeron Edwards and Jon Routledge scored in the first-half to secure the points for Saints.
