Nicky Deverdics believes that a more attacking brand of football at Wrexham next term will prove a hit with supporters.

Since taking charge, manager Sam Ricketts has made no secret of his desire to implement a more expansive style at the Reds and enhance their attacking threat.

The club's fine defensive displays under Dean Keates may have yielded a club record 22 clean sheets last term, but that success was offset by a poor goalscoring record.

Attacking midfielder Deverdics said: "We were very good defensively last year but it was well-known that we didn't score enough goals. "So I think if the gaffer can put a side out on the pitch that scores more goals and the fans have more to cheer about at home then I can't see that being anything but a good thing.

"Obviously he's got his own ideas that the lads have all bought into. They're different ideas to last year, but ideas that everyone's on board with and everyone's looking forward to the start of the new season.

"If we can get off to a good start and bag a few more goals than last season then I don't see how anyone can be anything but happy."

After seven new arrivals at the club over the summer, Wrexham's new-look squad has taken shape but Deverdics' own pre-season involvement has been restricted by injury.

Deployed on the left wing by Keates for periods of last season, the 30-year-old had been restored to his more favoured central attacking midfield role by Ricketts

But, having featured against Airbus and Lex in early friendlies, a swollen foot has since kept him out of Wrexham's last three games.

The setback has frustrated Deverdics, who admits that a lack of game time has limited his opportunities to play with new arrivals like Mike Fondop-Talom, Luke Summerfield and Luke Young.

"It's killed me a bit because I had felt good in pre-season and I'd been enjoying it since I'd come back, so to have missed the last three games has been really frustrating" he said.

"It's an innocuous injury that's come out of nowhere. My foot has flared up and, with the injury being where it is, I could hardly walk on it when the lads played Telford.

"There was a little setback last week, but I'm slowly getting there and I don't feel any pain now so that's good.

"I'd rather miss pre-season games than miss games when it matters, but at the same time I'm lacking minutes with not playing in the last three games.

"The game before that I played 45 minutes and before that I played 60 minutes out in Portugal.

"The adrenalin gets you through the first couple of games anyway, but to have that bit of sharpness would be more ideal than the situation I'm in.

"I've felt a lot more at home playing centrally. I think anyone can tell that I look a lot happier and freer in that position. I'm a lot more comfortable playing in that position and playing my own game. I'm not over-thinking things because I'm out of position and I'm playing somewhere that's a bit alien to me.

"Hopefully if I remain in that position for the rest of the season then I can play my best football.

"I think I've linked up quite well with Mike (Fondop-Talom) and Youngy, but I've not been able to play too much with Summers yet and it's not ideal that we don't know each other better on the pitch.

"But the rest of the lads were here last year, so it's not too much of an issue."

Former club Dover Athletic await the Reds in Saturday's National League opener, with Deverdics confident of being available for the game.

If he does feature, the playmaker is hoping for a happier time than he endured upon return to The Crabble with former club Hartlepool last season.

He said: "I did have a really good two years at Dover and I can't say anything bad about the club. I've been back once with Hartlepool when we got beat 4-0 and I got sent off so I would like to rectify that!

"To be fair the red card did get rescinded because it was a shocking decision, but it's not what you need when you're going back to a club for the first time after leaving and their fans are celebrating.

"But hopefully we'll be going back there and getting a win this time around and it'll be my turn to celebrate.

"When I was there we always seemed to have good results against Wrexham but I'm on the other side now, so hopefully the good luck will stick with me."
