Cefn Druids striker James Davies has rated his Europa League goal against FK Trakai as a highlight of his career to date.

The 23-year-old made history when he netted a 48th minute opener in the 1-1 draw, recording the Ancients first ever goal in European football.

A famous Druids victory had looked imminent against the Lithuanian side before an agonising late equaliser denied them in the first leg of their preliminary round tie.

Former Shrewsbury Town academy player Davies joined Druids from Llanfair United last year and has made a seamless transition to the Welsh top tier under manager Huw Griffiths.

Reflecting on the strike that capped his memorable European debut, Davies said: "It's massive for me, to be honest. A season ago, I wasn't playing anywhere near this level - I was in the league below so it feels amazing.

"I managed to get my first season in the Welsh Prem and obviously I've been a part of a Cefn Druids side that has surpassed all expectations throughout the season.

"For me personally, to be playing in Europe is just totally unexpected and to score Druids' first goal in Europe is an even bigger honour. I'm really happy with that and delighted for the team."

After defying the odds to reach the Europa League with a fifth place finish n the WPL last term, Druids acquitted themselves superbly against more experienced opposition.

And though Donatas Kazlauskas 86th minute leveller handed the visitors a vital away goal, Davies is optimistic about Druids' prospects for Thursday's second leg in Vilnius.

He said: "We went into the first game with a definite game plan that in the in the first 20-25 minutes we 'd have a go at them and I thought we did that really well.

"There were quite a few good chances for us early on, but nothing really dropped for us. But we came out strongly in the second half again and got ourselves the goal and then they really started coming out at us, as you'd really expect.

"Obviously we're just disappointed to concede near the end of the game, but we're still in it going into the second leg, which is the main thing.

"We definitely would have taken one-all before the game. Playing in Europe is obviously massive for the club and our supporters and it's something we're all proud to be a part of right now.

"I'd expect them to come at us a bit more in the second leg. Trakai stood off us a little bit at times and although they passed the ball nicely, they didn't really penetrate our defence at all.

"Like Huw has said, we're all in this as a team and we all back each other to do the club proud in the away leg now.

"I think in the second leg they'll come at us a bit earlier, but we'll go there with a game plan ourselves and try to match them."
