FORMER Wrexham and Chester left-back Johnny Hunt has signed for League Two side Stevenage.

The 27-year-old, who scored the winning penalty when Wrexham beat Grimsby Town in the 2013 FA Trophy final at Wembley, has joined on a free transfer from Mansfield Town.

After leaving Chester at the end of the 2016-17 campaign, Hunt made the switch to Mansfield and he made 18 league appearances for the Stags last season but has been allowed to leave Field Mill.

Hunt, who can play in a number of positions, becomes Stevenage manager Dino Maamria's ninth summer signing.

“I’m over the moon to join Stevenage,” Hunt told Stevenage's official website.

“The vibes coming out the club are really positive and I can’t wait to get stuck in.”

Mansfield manager David Flitcroft, who spent time at Chester City during his playing career, said opportunities would have been limited if Hunt stayed at Mansfield.

"Johnny is a great professional and a fantastic kid," Flitcroft told Mansfield's official website.

"He asked me if I could guarantee him first team football, which I couldn’t, so he’s taken the opportunity offered at Stevenage.

"Mal Benning is the first choice left back at the football club and is the type of player I want to work with. I see so much potential in Mal.

"We have young Henri Wilder coming though the system who has impressed and Johnny’s position in the squad may have stopped the progression of a good youth team player coming through."
