Brymbo booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Welsh Cup courtesy of a hard-fought five-run victory over Colwyn Bay.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Brymbo recovered from 10 for one to post 175 for nine from their allotted 40 overs, despite 5-28 from Flintshire-raised George Johansen.

Brymbo opener Gareth Pugh hit 40 from 56 balls and James Claybrook struck a half century as they put on 79 for the second wicket, while CJ Craven's run-a-ball 17 not out and 25 extras helped the Wrexham outfit post a competitive total.

Liverpool Competition outfit Colwyn Bay, who won the competition in 2015 before losing last year's final, reached 70 without loss before Brymbo hit back to leave the home side 91 for six, Connor Davies with 4-22.

Bay were not to exit the competition without a fight, however, Ryan Holtby hitting an unbeaten 34 at number 10, but the damage had been done as Brymbo held strong to triumph, Mohamed Nilam Jayman pocketing (2-15).

Connah's Quay were unable to make it two wins from two for North East Wales as they suffered an 81-run defeat at Prestatyn, who chose to bat first after winning the toss.

Quay captain Martin Burger bagged figures of 4-50 from his eight overs as Prestatyn posted 218 for seven from their 40 overs, Sheil Sethi (51), Gareth Leonard (42) and Ryan Westwell (38) in the runs.

Without the ineligible Matt Redinger and David Fox, who is injured, and Darren Jones, Quay's reply struggled to get off the ground.

Burger hit 34 at the top of the order, while Rob Downey top scorer at number eight with 37 and Dylan Stout was the only other batsman to reach double figures as he helped the total to 137 with his 27.

Adam Tidswell (5-33) and Gareth Boughey (4-31) did the damage with the ball for Prestatyn.
