It’s east against west as Brymbo and Connah’s Quay look to secure a place in the Welsh Cup quarter-finals on Sunday.

The North Wales League Premier Division duo will come head-to-head with Liverpool Competition pair Colwyn Bay and Prestatyn with a place in the last eight up for grabs.

James Claybrook’s Brymbo head to Penrhyn Avenue to face Colwyn Bay, who won the competition in 2015 before losing last year’s final to Cardiff.

On the challenge posed by Selwyn Morris’ men, Claybrook, who has seen his side successfully negotiate earlier round ties against Llay Welfare, Gwersyllt Park and Denbigh, said: “It’s the semi-final as such for the North Wales section so we are definitely keen to continue our run.

“Colwyn Bay are seen as the top side around these parts so we would be something special to topple them. We know as a side we are capable, it’s just about turning up on the day and putting in a big performance.

“I’ve played with a lot of the Colwyn Bay players growing up and know they are very good players, so we will be very wary of the threat they pose, but again we have confidence in our ability and back ourselves to push them all the way.

“These are the kind of fixtures you want to be involved in and all the lads are licking their lips for Sunday to come around.”

Brymbo are dealt a blow with pace ace Ben Roberts on minor counties duty, but David Blackwell is available with CJ Craven also promoted to the first XI.

Connah’s Quay are sweating on the fitness of key batsmen David Fox as they look to get the better of Prestatyn at Beach Close.

Fox is rated “50/50” by Quay captain Martin Burger as they look to continue improved form.

Quay, who have got past Buckley and Northop Hall on their way to the latter stages of the competition, are relishing the chance to take on Prestatyn and reach the last eight.

“It will be an interesting game,” said Burger. “We are looking forward to it.

“We’ve had some good matches with them in the past, but we’ve tended to win at our place and they seem to win more at home.

“They’ve got a good ground and it’s a good pitch, so we will be looking to reach the quarter-finals.

“It was fantastic when we got to go to Mumbles for the semi-finals two years ago and it would be good to do that again.”

Quay’s overseas pro, Matt Redinger, is unavailable, but he is backed to fire tomorrow as the Flintshire side make their way to hit and miss Llandudno in the Premier Division.

Burger’s men claimed their first league win of the season last weekend as they defeated Gresford by five wickets.

Captain Burger struck 115 to follow up his 124 in the defeat to St Asaph a week earlier as Quay won at the sixth attempt.

“The big thing for me was that we won and we deserved to win at last,” said Burger. “We should have won 14-1 in points, but the most important thing for us was getting the win.”

Fifth placed Brymbo, meanwhile, know they can climb at least one spot in the table if they topple Bangor, the duo locked on 77 points.

“Bangor are the league champions, they have some good individual players so we will definitely be looking to their scalp and improve on our league position,” said Claybrook, who saw Greg King and Mohamed Jayman in the runs as Brymbo beat Chirk last weekend.
