IT'S all systems go for Luke Young - on and off the field.

The 25-year-old midfielder turned down the offer of a new contract at Torquay, where he spent the last four seasons, to become Wrexham boss Sam Ricketts' first new signing on a two year contract.

Born in Ivybridge, Devon, Young progressed through the Plymouth Argyle youth system and played for the first team before joining Torquay in 2014, so the switch to north Wales represents a big step for the player and his family.

But Young is embracing the move away from home and playing for Wrexham, who return for pre-season on Monday.

"I felt it was time for me to move on and get out of Devon as such," said Young.

"Try something different, a new challenge for me in the football industry.

"A big club like Wrexham is hard to turn down and with my partner and little one coming up, it is a new chapter for the family; new surroundings, a new area, a fresh start for everyone.

"We are really looking forward to it - family and football - and hopefully it is a successful season fighting it out at the top of the league."

Young and his partner began looking at properties the day he put pen to paper at The Racecourse and they are moving into their new house today.

"When I found out Wrexham were interested, my partner got onto the housing side of it," said Young.

"We picked out a few we liked and fulfilled what what we wanted.

"We picked out one that we were really interested in and when we viewed it, we really liked it and said we would have it.

"Everything was sorted with the old house and we are moving on Friday."

When Shaun Pearson, who himself relocated to the area when he joined Wrexham 12 months ago from Grimsby, found out Young was joining the club he immediately contacted him.

The duo have never played together in the same team and Young praised the Reds' captain.

"The day I signed, Shaun dropped a text saying if there was anything we needed or anything he could help with, to let him know," said Young.

"I have only played against Shaun but that was good, a nice touch, and I have had a bit of contact with him."

Young, who made more than 130 league appearances for Torquay, scoring 16 goals, will meet his new team-mates for the first time today when Wrexham begin pre-season training.

"I don't know any of the other lads personally, just playing against them, but like any club you fit in," said Young.

"After a couple of days everyone knows each other, I am looking forward to it."

Regardless of the fact Torquay were relegated from the National League last season, Young admits it was time for a new challenge and he jumped at the chance to sign for Wrexham.

"It was a disappointing season but even if Torquay stayed up, I had an idea it was in my best interests to move on anyway," added Young.

"I tried to get sorted as soon as possible but not rush in and say 'yes' early and then something else comes along and you should have gone there.

"I could not fault the gaffer when I met him. He spoke well about everything, he is a new manager and his ideas were very positive.

"It was nice to get it over the line a month before we come back, knowing I was going to play for Wrexham and not worry about finding something.

"I am really happy and can't wait to get going."
