DIXIE MCNEIL wants to see a more attacking style of play when Wrexham kick off an 11th season in non-league.

Wrexham finished 10th in the National League last term, 19 draws from 46 league games and just 49 goals scored being a major reason for failing to reach the play-offs.

Racecourse legend McNeil, the club president, feels Wrexham were too negative - particularly at The Racecourse - and says the Reds need to make the most of home advantage.

"We just weren't good enough and did not create goals last season," said McNeil.

“Certainly at home, we need to be be more attack minded and a bit more positive going forward. I know you don’t want to be too open in play but you need to be scoring goals.

"Going forward with the ball, we did not assert ourselves on games.

"At home, that is where you need to win your points and we did not do enough of that."

Striker Chris Holroyd, who has signed a new one year deal, was the only player to get into double figures last season as he finished top scorer with 13 goals.

McNeil says a lack of goals meant wins were always going to be hard to come by.

“We haven’t scored goals," said McNeil. "We played games where we have dominated and haven’t killed the opposition off, and you have got to do that.

“If you look at this league, there are that many teams that are in a position to go up but they are not winning enough matches.

“We need an out and out goalscorer, but I think we need to change our style of play a little bit.

“All the top clubs have got a goalscorer that has got 20-plus goal in the season and none of our players haven’t.

“I am not blaming the strikers, they are not getting enough opportunities so we just need to change our style of play a bit.”

Wrexham boasted the best defensive record in the division, conceding just 39 goals, and the Reds set a new club record after keeping 22 clean sheets in the league.

But failure to put games to bed when Wrexham took the lead ultimately cost them a place in the top seven as the promotion challenge fell away.

"When it is 1-0, if the other team gets a goal it is two points dropped," said McNeil.

"We never killed teams off and always left the game open for the 90 minutes.

"It is fine away from home but at home you need to get the majority of your points."

Sam Ricketts has been appointed Reds boss, taking up his first managerial appointment, and McNeil has urged supporters to get behind the former Wales international.

"I don't know Sam but he has got a good background," said McNeil. "I wish him well like everybody else does.

"In a sense, managers need time to settle in and you have got to give Sam a chance at the end of the day.

"We all want to get promoted and it is going to be a case of see where it goes. I hopes he comes out and blitzes the league but we will have to wait and see.

"Sam is a young man with his own ideas. Everyone needs to get behind him and urge him on but that won't be hard for Wrexham fans, they do that all the while.

"Coming in from Wolves who have always played attractive football, it will be interesting to see what style of play he brings to the club."
