Northop Hall beat Southport Trinity by just one run in an absolute thriller in the Liverpool Competition Second Division.

Electing to bat at The Rookery, Hall stuttered their way to 106 all out in just 35 overs as Southport bowler Jake Sunderland got on top of the batsmen to take 5-49.

Hall were grateful to Jamie Hodgson (27 off 29 balls) and Jack Billington (27 from 33 balls) to at least propel them to three figures.

It looked like being a winning score however as Southport were reduced to 65 for seven with Jamie Griffiths (2-17) and James Hurlin (3-28 from 20 overs, including 10 maidens) getting in on the act, but a 37-run stand between Luke Falkiner (15) and Liam Simms (22no) took the hosts to the brink of victory, needing just five to win with three wickets in hand.

But Hall were not to be denied as Dan Clubbe came back on to claim the final wickets for figures of 4-42 from 16.2 overs, as Hall snatched a dramatic win.

Lancashire and England Development Ladies opener Ellie Threlkeld took Northop Hall’s second XI attack apart as Rainford claimed a seven-wicket in.

Hall posted 183 for five declared off 38 overs, Ben Slater making 59 and Gareth Fox adding 36, but Threlkeld made a sparkling 76 not out in reply, supported by Mark Brook’s 77 as the visitors eased to 188 for three in 40.2 overs.
