The games have been coming thick and fast since the conclusion of pre-season and the start of the season is always a bit nerve-wracking.

There is pressure to ensure all the hard work and commitment we have put in during pre-season is all worthwhile.

The lads were excited about this upcoming season because we have such a great group and the atmosphere around the squad has been the best since I joined Glamorgan. The energy is so important for us going forward.

We started the County Championship campaign with a great win away against Gloucestershire. This was a great start for the team, mixed with youth and experience.

For myself, it was made extra special by scoring a hundred, which to date is my career best score. Contributing to a win is always special and the celebration after the game with the team was worth the long toil in the field.

The buzz of the first win in this campaign was dampened after a washout against Middlesex at Lord’s and we then went on to lose the next two games against Kent and Leicestershire, which went down to the wire and we were slightly unlucky with the outcomes.

However the mood with the lads was still great afterwards which I suppose is natural with a youthful team.

The One-Day Cup began in the middle of May, where we had really high expectations going into the competition.

After losing the first game, we struggled to find any form of consistency with bat and ball which was very disappointing. We could not get the ball rolling to give us the much needed momentum to change our fortunes, which is crucial in the short turnaround between games.

The atmosphere in the squad was still positive after five consecutive losses. We trained hard but could not deliver the results we desperately needed.

It was frustrating because we had not won a match after being in strong positions in many of them. One positive for this young team is the vital lessons you learn from this experience. Fingers crossed in a couple of years the same bunch of lads can be a team challenging for big things.

Personally, I had a great start to the competition with the bat, having produced another career best, and was pleased to move to the middle order.

We now go back to red-ball cricket as we travel to Birmingham to face Warwickshire, which I am personally looking forward to, along with the rest of the boys, as it represents something of a fresh start.

After a tricky few weeks on the road with matches every other day, we have a quiet period with three County Championship fixtures before heading into the T20 Blast.

It’s great to see my home club, Brymbo, getting off to a solid start in the North Wales Premier League. I’m always following the scores online and it’s great seeing all my mates are doing well.

Hopefully I’ll be able to pop home soon and go up to the cricket and watch the lads challenge for the number one spot!

Thanks again for taking time to read the column.
