'Like a whirlwind' was Afon Bagshaw's verdict on his early success with the Wales Sevens side.

Since winning his first cap for the national team at the Las Vegas 7s in March, the talented RGC full-back from Flint has excelled for the Dragons with a string of fine performances.

The 24-year-old has seized his opportunity and most recently guided a youthful Wales side to Challenge Trophy success at the Grand Prix series in Moscow a fortnight ago.

Bagshaw is now set to feature prominently again this weekend at the latest round of the World Rugby Sevens Series in Twickenham.

Reflecting on a hectic three months with club and country, Bagshaw said: "Since being called up for the Vegas series it's been like a whirlwind for me to be honest.

"It's such an honour to be out there playing for your country and to have gone on from Vegas to the Vancouver and Hong Kong series was an amazing start to my time with the sevens side.

"Playing out in Moscow was another brilliant experience too, being one of the only capped players out there with such a young side was a big challenge, but the younger lads did really well.

"We got an excellent 21-14 win in the opener against England before we beat Georgia and then Sweden in the trophy final.

"Coming back with the trophy has been good for everyone and it was testament to all of the hard work we put in up there.

"Now we want to back that up with some big performances at Twickenham this weekend.

"The first game against Spain is massive for us and it's important that we get the weekend started right and kick on from there."

Currently 14th in the series standings the Welsh face Pool B fixtures against Spain, Australia and Ireland in the two-day series.

The Welsh are buoyed by the return from injury of both Lloyd Evans along with former Wales U20 fullback Will Talbot-Davies.

Cardiff Blues' Williams and Ospreys' Cory Allen - with 28 and six senior Wales caps respectively - are both named in Gareth Williams', as are Dragons' Jared Rosser and Jason Harries.

Head coach Williams said: "It's an exciting group with some experienced players returning to the fold.

"We want to finish the last two World Series events as strongly as possible, starting in London this week.

"We are disappointed with our points haul to date, and want to finish strongly to complement the number of new caps and young players we've developed this year.

"This will put us in good stead longer term, but the next few weeks are about the here and now and we want to excel in our 'home' tournaments."

Wales will finish the 2017/18 World Rugby Sevens Series in Paris on June 10 before flying to San Francisco for the Sevens Rugby World Cup in July.
