SHAUN PEARSON admits it will be a “massive failure” if Wrexham don’t secure a play-off spot.

The Reds’ chances of finishing in the top seven are extremely bleak following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Leyton Orient.

The fourth loss in five outings leaves 10th placed Wrexham one point behind Dover, who occupy the last play-off spot, but the Reds need other results to go their way tomorrow night and on Saturday to keep the challenge alive.

Wrexham, who have an inferior goal difference, would also need to beat Fylde on the final day and Pearson says missing out would be a huge blow, with the Reds top of the table in February and in the top seven for the majority of the campaign.

“If I am totally honest the football club needs to be tougher as a whole,” said Pearson.

“It is a work in progress and it has definitely improved in that respect.

“Hopefully when the new manager comes in, they will take it by the scruff of the neck and things will move on again.

“The football club has taken a massive step in the right direction this season so positive from that point of view but if I am totally honest, from where we were it is a massive failure if we don’t get in the play-offs”

Wrexham, winless in six games, have only taken six points from a possible 24 since manager Dean Keates left to take charge of Walsall, with his assistant Andy Davies, handed the reigns until the end of the season.

The odds are against Wrexham making the play-offs in their 10th season at this level but Davies refuses to throw in the towel until it is mathematically impossible and is looking to finish with a win against Fylde.

“It is never over until the points say it is over,” said Davies. “What we have done is not give ourselves any chance of being in there realistically. It is not over but certainly it does make it tougher.

“Results as they have gone, we needed to win the game and we haven’t. Next Saturday, it is seeing what other results are.

“We have to pick ourselves up and end the season with a victory at home if we can. But ultimately we have let ourselves down like we have done in previous weeks.”
