LEO SMITH is pleased with his pre-season form and admits scoring the winner in Portugal was “unbelievable.”

The midfielder bagged a late goal as Wrexham beat Louletano DC 2-1 in a friendly during the four day training camp in the Algarve.

Wrexham had trailed but Ntumba Massanka levelled before Smith bagged the decisive goal after meeting Jack Mackreth’s cross in front of more than 600 travelling Reds fans.

“It was fantastic, unbelievable, with all the fans there as well,” said Smith, pictured below right.

“It is a once in a lifetime opportunity, you don’t get many clubs at this level going abroad in pre-season with so many fans supporting you.

“Jack crossed the ball from the right to the far post, I made a run from the left and I scored with a diving header back across goal.

“I think it was a good goal! Every game I play I just want to win, it does not matter who we play, but to score the winner was a great feeling.

“It means I have scored the winning goal in Europe!”

Victory over Louletano, who play in the third tier of Portuguese football, came after Wrexham began pre-season with successive 3-1 wins over Lex Glyndwr and Cefn Druids.

Wrexham maintained their 100 per cent record in the build up to the new National League campaign by making it four victories in a row as the Reds overcame Stafford Rangers 2-1 on Saturday.

Smith, who netted in the opening friendly against Lex, is pleased with his performances since returning from the summer break and the 19-year-old hopes to secure a place in Dean Keates’ side for the opening day clash against Macclesfield Town at The Racecourse on August 5.

“I think every game I have played well,” said Smith.

“Hopefully I have impressed the staff and the fans.

“I know I can do better at times, that will come, but hopefully I can get in the starting line-up for the first game of the season.”

Smith, who signed his first professional contract in February and was named Young Player of the Year after making the breakthrough last season, insists it is important to continue the winning habit in pre-season, with Wrexham facing Warrington Town at Cantilever Park in their next friendly tonight.

“Pre-season is going well,” said Smith. “All the lads have gelled after a couple of weeks. Hopefully we can keep winning games and keep the winning mentality and take it into the new season.

“It does mean a lot winning games even in pre-season. I have always wanted to win everything I play in and every player here is the same.

“It keeps the group in a happy manner but the boys have been gelling that well that even if we do lose, we won’t let that unsettle us and we will keep on going.”
