PLAYER-BOSS Andy Morrell insists he deserved to be awarded the penalty which sealed Wrexham's progress into the third round of the FA Trophy, writes RICHARD WILLIAMS.
The Solihull players did not agree with referee Darren England's decision after Morrell was brought down in the area and Dean Keates converted the 65th minute spot-kick to secure a 3-2 victory at The Racecourse.
Morrell was delighted to reach the last 16 of the competition but feels there is room for improvement from his side at both ends of the pitch.
“For me it was a penalty but they were all moaning saying I had dived and all that,” said Morrell. “I got there first, they toed it away and I thought they took me out so I will take it. I thought it was a penalty.
“We just have to be a little bit clinical in front of goal and shut the back door a bit more, we have to work their strikers a bit more.
“If we play like that against Grimsby then we could get hurt at times so we have got to be a bit more solid and a bit more resolute, and a bit more clinical in the final third.
“But first half we could have come in 4-1 up but for the chances that we missed. Cup football is strange and you just want to get through and get in that hat.”
Wrexham twice had to come from behind before overcoming the Conference North side and Morrell admitted: “It was a tough game.
“We had the majority of the possession but just couldn't break them down or when we did get the chance it was one that fell straight to the keeper, he was in the right place at the right time.
“We weren't great in the first half, they scored a worldy and then they have got something to defend but we had the lion share and we got back in it.
“It just needed a little bit of care in the final third to break them down and I thought second half we were a lot better on the front foot, we created a lot more chances. I probably think we deserved to win but it was still a nervy little ending.”
Morrell praised the spirit in the Wrexham side to ensure they were not going to be victims of a cup upset.
“There is a bit of character in this squad, we have done that a few times this year,” added Morrell. “Last year was a bit different, we tended to score first a lot of the time and then people were having to come out and chase us but we have conceded too many goals to start with this year.
“We concede but we do react and get back into it and I thought we were half decent. I am just happy to get through.”
