Wright: Wrexham FC must learn to break teams down

Stephen Wright admits Wrexham have got to learn to break down teams who put plenty of bodies behind the ball.

The Reds right-back was speaking after Wrexham suffered a 2-1 defeat against Hereford United despite dominating a one-sided second half.

Hereford held a 1-0 lead at the interval and although Wright equalised in the 58th minute, Wrexham were unable to make the most of their greater possession and the Bulls scored an injury time winner.

“We are a scalp,” said Wright. “Teams come here and get men behind the ball. Hereford had nine men behind the ball first half and it was difficult for us to get through them.

“Second half, we have gone to get the ball in the box and get past them quicker, and it worked but we just couldn’t quite see them off.

“When it stays like that, they get geed up. Hereford are a little bit bigger than us and all they are going for is set-pieces. They got a set-piece and we conceded from it again.

“Of what I have seen this season, Hyde came here and they wanted to play. They never sat back. Eveyone else has come to keep the fans quiet, go in 0-0 at half-time or even nick a goal.

“It is difficult to break teams down but we have got to do it. We want to get to the next tier of football so we have got to find a way of beating these teams.”

Although Wrexham like to get the ball down and play nice football, Wright stressed all that counts is picking up a victory even if it means winning ugly.

“These scrappy games, you have just got to come away with the win no matter how well you play,” said Wright. “You can’t always pass the ball – just get the win. That’s what we have been told – force the win.

“If you read the newspaper the next day, everyone just sees the three points and Wrexham won. How they played does not go down in the record books.”

Wright was not in the mood for celebrating his first Wrexham goal and first goal for more than eight years - he last scored in Sunderland’s 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest on September 14, 2004 - after ending up on the losing side.

“I would rather not score and have the three points,” said Wright. “The lads are down and disappointed.

“You look at the second half performance from the first half and we dominated. I think they got in our half two, maybe three times. Then they go and score in injury time and that just kills everything.

“The chances that we had in the second half, we could have won   3-1 or 4-1.

“It is a hard one to take and it was a chance for us to take points off Newport with a game in hand.

“We are still there. We have got to have more belief. We still haven’t performed at our highest yet and we are still up there.”

Wright netted with an overhead kick after Dean Keates’ corner rebounded off the post.

“I have eased the keeper for the first one and he is saying it is a free-kick,” added Wright. “He is jumping. I am not going to move am I?

“I could have probably headed it instead of doing the overhead kick but I left it because I thought the curl on the ball, it has gone in from Keatesy’s corner.

“As it came off the post, I just flung myself. I have been getting in there amongst it this season so it was only a matter of time. I should score more anyway.”
