Jay Harris: 'We're a force to be reckoned with'

Jay Harris during Tuesday's 4-1 victory at Southport

JAY HARRIS believes Wrexham have shown they can pick up results when not at their best – but the midfielder insists the Reds are a force to be reckoned with when at the top of their game.

Second placed Wrexham, who host Hereford United at The Racecourse tomorrow (1pm), go into the game on the back of a 4-1 victory against Southport in midweek, a result that keeps Andy Morrell’s side four points behind leaders Newport County with a game in hand.

Trailing 1-0 at the interval, Wrexham scored four times during a much- improved second half and Harris is looking for more of the same against mid-table Hereford who are unbeaten in six games.

“We have got to keep winning,” said Harris. “We have kept the pressure on the top teams, we have got a game in hand on Newport and can go one point behind them if we win it.

“That is all we can do. Before we look anywhere else, we have got to concentrate on ourselves but it is always a bonus when other people lose.

“This is an important period now to Christmas time. We did it last year. We went so many games unbeaten and we have got to do it again to stake our claim for the top.

“We have just got to stick to our game.

“The sign of a good side is when you are not at your best and you are nicking results – Manchester United do it all the time and they are a great side.

“We are a good side in this league and it shows by our position. When we are not at our best we nick results but when we are at our best we can batter teams.”

Harris admitted Wrexham, who suffered an FA Cup first round defeat at the hands of Alfreton Town on Saturday, were below par in the opening period at Southport but a few choice words during the half-time interval had the desired effect.

It was Harris who put Wrexham back on level terms following the dismissal of Southport midfielder Godfrey Poku and three goals in the space of eight minutes wrapped up victory.

“We started the game off poorly and that was the same for the whole of the first half,” said Harris. “We got a rollicking at half-time because we weren’t up to much, and we haven’t been lately.

“But we came out and showed how good we are in the second half. We got on top of it, scored the goal and with them down to 10 men I think there was only going to be one winner after that.”

And although his 25-yard drive took a defelction for the equaliser, Harris was not going to be denied his third goal of the season.

“The free-kick was laid off to me and I just hit it,” added Harris. “It took a deflection and it went in but it is my goal - I am claiming it.

“After that we just attacked and attacked, and I thought we defended a lot better. When Adrian Cieslewicz came on he was magnificent.”
