Alfreton tie the reward for Wrexham FC

PLAYER-BOSS Andy Morrell believes Wrexham deserved victory against Southport as they earned themselves a home FA Cup first round tie against fellow Conference side Alfreton Town.

Wrexham triumphed 2-0 at The Racecourse in an end to end fourth qualifying round clash and Morrell was delighted his side bounced back from the defeat against Lincoln City the previous weekend which ended a 12-game unbeaten run.

“We stress that at the end of the day, you have to win a football match by hook or by crook, whether it is three points or the next round of the cup,” said Morrell.

“And we managed to bounce back from last Saturday which is a good sign so I am pleased with the win.

“We didn’t play fantastically well, at times we did and we had some good moves but it was all about getting in that draw.

“We didn’t get away with murder because it could have been 5-0 to us at some stage, we could have conceded a couple but the lads threw their bodies on the line.

“I think we deserved to win but there are a few bits and bobs that we need to work on to be better.”

Dean Keates gave Wrexham the lead two minutes before the interval with a 20-yard free-kick and Brett Ormerod made sure of the win with his first goal for the club in second half added time.

“At times we looked alright but they broke on us a few times; Joslain Mayebi made a couple of saves - not great saves but he did what he needed to do - and it was a good free-kick from Keatsey that got us 1-0 up,” said Morrell.

“We rode our luck a little bit in the second half, although we had chances to bury it. It was very similar to Dartford and a few of the games here, we get in the lead and then we are under it at the end but we nicked one in the last minute just to put it to bed.”

With Martin Riley failing to recover from a hamstring injury sustained against Lincoln, Morrell handed Danny Devine a debut in the heart of the Wrexham defence and he was delighted with how the 20-year-old, who is on loan from Fleetwood Town, performed.

“I was a bit unsure whether to play him or Stephen Wright,” said Morrell. “I spoke to the staff and a few of the senior players and he deserved a go.

“I thought he did great, really well. We know if he is needed and called upon, absolutely no problem because he heads it, competes and talks, and I like his attitude.

“It is another good positive for us.”
