Tries are just the icing on the cake for Leon

LEON BRENNAN insists that his hat-trick against Oldham was nothing more than a welcome bonus.

For Brennan, who scored three of North Wales Crusaders six tries, his treble ranks below a return to competitive action and the 30-28 victory.

“It feels great to be back because it has been frustrating on the sidelines watching us play well but getting beaten,” he explained.

“It was touch and go as to whether I was going to play although I trained all week.

“They said I  would start and to take my chance, luckily I took it!

“Scoring in the first two minutes always helps settle the nerves.”

There were no obvious signs that Brennan was taking a cautious approach with regards the shoulder injury that had seen him miss the previous three matches.

“I was still a bit wary of my shoulder but you have got to get it out of your head and get on with the game,” he said.

“If it happens again then it happens again, I have spoken to the coach and we know what we are doing.

“It is always in the mind when you get tackled and you are always wondering where to put the arm.

“When it felt like it was going somewhere I didn’t want it to go I did my best to control it.

“Luckily when I was going for the tries there was no-one near me so I could just get the ball and go over.”

A contender for man of the match due to his try-scoring feats, Brennan shrugged off his own performance, admitting that he was left with a trio of simple finishes thanks to the efforts of his team mates.

“I did alright,” he responded when asked about his hat-trick. “I can’t score without players around me.

“Billy Sheen did well for one of the tries, Iwan Brown did well for another and Alex Trumper set me up for the third.

“I just finished the tries well and that is mainly all about hoping that the ball comes to you in the right areas.”

Despite a strong individual performance Brennan revealed that he failed to escape head coach Clive Griffiths’ half-time ear bashing.

“We got roasted at half time,” he said. “As soon as we walked in I could see his face and I didn’t want to look him in the eyes.

“He started off by saying things to me but I knew what I had done wrong.”
