WREXHAM FC could be celebrating milestone birthdays on the wrong date.
The club badge proudly bears 1873 as the year of its formation, but there is evidence to suggest the club actually came into being 12 months earlier.
Now Wrexham Supporters Trust, the Reds’ new owner, is to hold a special meeting to discuss amending the badge.
Chairman Peter Jones says if the proposal is passed it would mean that this year marks the club’s 140th anniversary.
Among the evidence supporting 1872 as the founding year is an article in the Wrexham Guardian newspaper dated October 5, 1872.
The report says: “Wrexham Football Club: a meeting, chiefly composed of members of the cricket club, was held at the Turf Hotel on Saturday last, September 28, for the purpose of starting the football club for the ensuing season.
“The attendance was large and the following gentlemen were appointed to the management, viz:- President: F. Page Esq.; hon. sec, Mr W.H. Pritchard; committee: Messrs T. Walker, N. Humphreys, B. Dale, E. Cross, G. Pritchard, and E. Evans.
“The opening game will be played this day – Saturday – at 3pm, when a good muster is expected.”
Another point of debate among fans has been whether the Reds should be called Wrexham FC or Wrexham AFC.
When the club was formed it was officially called Wrexham Football Club but in 1912 the club became a limited company and the A – standing for Association – was added to the name.
In 2006 the name reverted to Wrexham Football Club with the formation of a new company following administration.
The trust board proposes the badge is shown as Wrexham FC in line with the name and the year the club was formed.
The special meeting is at the Centenary Club at 7.30pm on Monday, February 20.
