AN enraged man smashed three windows at his former girlfriend’s flat after he was greeted at the door by a man wearing only underwear.

Jack Hughes, 23, of Hamlington Avenue, Gwersyllt admitted criminal damage when he appeared at Wrexham Magistrates’ Court.

Prosecutor Justin Espie told the court Amelia Horton was awoken by a bang on front door of her property in Gwersyllt and found Hughes on the doorway.

He left after a short conversation, but returned carrying an object and there was a loud crash as a long pole came flying through the window.

She looked out and watched as Hughes threw objects at two further windows. CCTV footage showed him carrying a brick and when he was later arrested he admitted smashing the windows in the early hours of March 1.

Laura Preston-Hayes, defending, said the incident had been triggered by coming across the other man when he returned to his ex’s flat. The couple had been out for a meal when his former girlfriend gave him a key to her apartment as they went their separate ways.

“He sent her a message on Facebook, but she didn’t get back to him so he went to his parents’ house. Thinking she didn’t have a key he went back to her flat and saw a man come to the door in his underwear, while she was shouting “get out, get out” at him,” outlined Ms Preston-Hayes..

“He felt badly at the time and in his poor judgement he caused some damage to the property, but it is to his credit that he didn’t harm the male.

“He has expressed remorse, they are no longer together and he has moved on while he has also asked to be referred for counselling to see why he got into that state.”

Hughes was handed a two-year conditional discharge by magistrates and ordered to pay £250 compensation to Ms Horton. He was also told to pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £20.
