FAMILY and friends are rallying round a teenager in his battle against cancer.

Adam Davies, 15, of Johnstown, is undergoing weekly chemotherapy sessions at Alder Hey Children's Hospital after being diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

His mother Lisa Davies, 48, told how the diagnosis at Wrexham Maelor Hospital on April 12 came as a "massive shock", as she thought Adam had been anaemic.

She added that Adam, a pupil at Ysgol Dinas Bran, had been "quite tearful" when he first received the news.

But Adam is now coping well, having read up on his condition, spoken to a fellow patient and her family at Alder Hey and discussed his treatment with nurses at the Merseyside hospital.

Lisa added: "He's amazing. He's grown up a lot in the last few weeks. He's never been ill before, never had any problems.

"He's coped with it very well indeed. It's frightening enough as an adult to to have something like this but as a child, he's grown up a lot."

Adam lives with his mother and older brother Jack, 20, and Lisa's partner Mark.

He also being supported in his battle against leukaemia by his father Geraint Davies, of Pentre Broughton.

As part of a shared care scheme, Adam will received chemotherapy and bone marrow aspirations at Alder Hey, with blood or platelet transfusions at the Maelor.

The family are waiting for test results to come back, but Lisa said that the prognosis was usually good with this type of leukaemia.

Lisa was full of praise for Alder Hey and its staff, adding: "They're amazing. I have never been there before. To see it set up they have there is amazing."

Colleagues at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, where Lisa works in anaesthesia and recovery, held a collection to buy Adam an iPad.

A friend of Lisa's sister Lucy Dobbins has arranged for Adam to have a tour of Anfield, the home of Liverpool FC.

Lisa's best friend Michaela Edge has organised a sponsored walk up Snowdon, scheduled for the end of May, to raise funds for Adam.

Lisa said: "We're all really touched that there's so much support. I've got really good colleagues and friends."

She added: "We're just amazed at how kind people are, to be honest,"
