Dedicated fundraisers didn't let the rain stop them from paying tribute to a stalwart volunteer.

A charity football match was held in memory of Byron Jones, of Bagillt, who died on Sunday, February 4.

Members, players and executives at Flint Town United Football Club stood together to say a silent 'thank you' to Mr Jones, who was a long-standing volunteer in St John Ambulance Cymru.

The 49 year old had been "dedicated" to the service for over 20 years, who said "it was his whole life."

Mr Jones joined the Flint division of St John Ambulance more than two decades ago prompted by his generous and kind nature, his family said.

Colin Jones, Byron’s brother, said: "It was his life. He worked himself up to be the officer in charge over the years, until he was head of the Flint division. He worked mostly within North Wales."

Mr Jones weekly visited Flint Town UFC and was a dedicated fan for many years. Dozens of members of the community had prepared for the charity football match on Saturday, March 21. But the 6pm kick-off was cancelled as the pitch had become water-logged.

Community spirit still pulled through in a special tribute to Mr Jones, and "the show went on" - without the football - with a raffle, food and drinks stalls, live entertainment and games.

Michael Redshaw, a member of Flint Town UFC, said: "A lot of Flint people and people from St John Ambulance came down. I would like to say a special thanks to them for turning up and helping us remember Bryon Jones.

"We raised £500 on the night despite the football not going ahead, with various bucket collections and raffle draws.

"Towards the end of the season, we will start looking at putting up a bench in memory of Byron, and the rest of the money will be donated to St John Ambulance Cymru for all their hard work."
