A school in Wrexham has become the first to be labelled dementia friendly.

St Christopher’s School has just been awarded with certification for working towards being a dementia friendly school by the Dementia Friendly Wrexham Association.

Pupils and staff have been working hard towards being the first school to achieve this accolade by taking part in training, having dementia friendly signage and working very closely with people in

the local community living with dementia.

The Welsh Baccalaureate Group at St Christopher’s has been working with Hollybank Care Home,

which is near the school, for more than a year.

The group has planned and implemented a number of activities with the residents of Hollybank, all of whom have dementia.

Activities they have planned and taken part in include bingo, play your cards right, singing

and dancing, nail-painting and pampering.

Hollybank has also visited the school on numerous occasions for coffee mornings, Christmas dinner and tours around the school.

Welsh Baccalaureate co-ordinator Ceri Ellis has praised the students for all the hard work

that they have inputted into their Community Challenge, which has led to the school obtaining this

certificate.

She said: "It is wonderful to see the different generations working with each other and bonding lasting relationships. A

"All the work that has been put in is towards the students passing their community challenge which will go towards their Skills Challenge Certificate and their Welsh Baccalaureate qualification.

"The school is going from strength to strength with their Dementia Friendly status and now has

other groups of students participating in similar activities, developing their links with the community."
