A MAN has been arrested following reports of chemicals and other substances being found.

A bomb disposal team and emergency services were called to a flat at Bron y Wern in Bagilt around 5.30am yesterday morning with residents asked to evacuate their flats.

As a result, a man in his 30’s was taken to hospital but was later discharged and arrested.

Whilst in Bron y Wern, officers discovered several chemicals and substances which gave them cause for concern and sealed off the area while items were examined.

Police said the action being taken was precautionary and stressed it was not a terrorist related incident.

North Wales Police tweeted at about 10am: “Adjoining three flats have been evacuated as a precaution.

“Please avoid area to allow emergency services free access.”

Police added that a bomb disposal (EOD) unit was also on site.

“EOD and fire service also in attendance.

“Police cordon is just a precaution while specialists carry out checks.

“We can confirm that this is not a terrorist related incident and the activity is purely precautionary.”

Items were removed and will be examined to determine their exact make-up.

At 10.40am, North Wales Police tweeted to confirm that there was no danger to the public and the operation was winding down.

It read: “Update from Bron y Wern #Bagillt. Specialists at scene have confirmed there is no risk posed to the public. EOD will be leaving the location shortly. Cordon has been reduced to just cover the property and as such all residents can return to their properties.

“Thanks for cooperation.”

Residents expressed their frustration and confusion to find police officers on their doorstep.

Sophie Williams, of Bron y Wern said officers knocked on her door about 8am telling her to stay inside.

She added: “I panicked, I have a little boy and was surprised to see a policeman. I told them I had to get to work, what am I going to do, but thankfully it’s all sorted now.”

Gary Sandall, 49, who lives on Bron y Wern with his wife and four children, said: “We were woken up about 8.55am this morning saying there was an incident and to stay indoors, which wasn’t really ideal.”

Supt. Nick Evans at North Wales Police, who managed the multi-agency response, said they were fortunate enough to notice substances within the flat which caused them some concern.

He added: “The response of all our emergency service partners and EOD was reassuringly prompt and professional and I’d like to pass on my sincere thanks to all those involved.”

A man was arrested on suspicion of possessing explosive substances.
