A road in Lixwm was closed after a crash that damaged a telegraph pole and cables.

North Wales Police were called to reports of a one vehicle collision on the B5121 in the village shortly after 9am.

The driver of the silver 4x4 was arrested by officers at the scene.

A spokesman said: "A silver van was found on its side in Lixwm. One male was arrested for unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle.

"The man has been arrested and that he failed to conduct a drugs test."

Two police cars ensured the road was temporarily closed before highway maintenance crews arrived at the scene to impose a proper road closure.

Traffic is being diverted through Holywell as access to the popular A541 is limited from Lixwm, Babell, Brynford and surrounding villages.

Insp Darren Whibberley, of North Wales Police South Flintshire, said: "The driver has been remanded in custody and refused a drugs swipe or breath test, which can mean he could loose his licence for up to three years.

"There is also a potential substantial amount of cost to replace the fibre optic cable that was damaged.

"The vehicle is believed to be stolen from the Babell area. If there are any witnesses, please call 101 as we would be grateful of any information."

Officers were concerned that the overturned vehicle had damaged phone and electricity cables as the impact from the crash had taken down a pole and wires.

Local electricians called to the scene confirmed the damaged wire was a BT Phone line and crews are currently at the scene attempting to clear the vehicle from the road.

Updates to follow.
