A school threatened with closure is a "precious resource," the chair of governors has said.

Ann Rowlands, head governor at Lixwm Primary School, near Holywell, said the 170-year-old school is more than just a learning facility.

Mrs Rowlands told the Leader: "The school plays a prominent role in the local community as a venue for two busy pilates classes - including one for the school staff.

"The chapel regularly uses the grounds of the school for parking during social events, the Urdd fundraising committee has used the hall and local young people value the use of the large school playing field.

"Due to this use there has been a growing interest in using the school facilities for the community.

"The school is also well supported by the local community council with members on the governing body who are able to update the community council on a monthly basis.

"The school has continued to educate and fulfil all the children's needs to a high standard throughout a prolonged and difficult area review.

"There is a great strength of feeling to save the school in our community and people are working hard to protect this precious resource."

The amalgamation of Brynford and Lixwm Schools, as recommended by Flintshire council's education committee, is under a consultation period until Thursday, May 10.
