A HOST of improvements have been completed around a primary school to ensure ‘safe routes’ for the community.

Following a funding boost of £72,000 for safe routes last year, as announced by cabinet secretary, Ken Skates, the work has now been completed around Golftyn Primary school in Connah’s Quay.

Councillors for the area Paul Shotton and Andy Dunbobbin are delighted with the outcome

Cllr Shotton said they received confirmation of being awarded funds in February last year and the school is one of the first in Wales to provide safe routes for the community.

He added: “We had a consultation last July with residents and we went through Flintshire County Council to receive the funds from Welsh Government.

“We will definitely see improvements around the school now that changes have been made and we’ve already had some favourable comments from residents.”

The safe routes, which have now been completed following the winter weather, include a new school crossing, 20mph zones in the area, a re-allocated bus stop and pavement repairs.

A time restricted zone has also been put in place outside the school to stop parents parking during busy times and the councillor is hopeful the scheme will expand to most, if not all schools.

The school governor said: “Outside most schools is very hectic when parents pick their children up.

“Putting the safe routes around the primary school was something Andy Dunbobbin and I, as county councillors, were very keen on doing in our area and we targeted Golftyn Primary as it is our ward.

“If this scheme saves one fatality it has served its purpose.”
