PLANS to tear down a part of Deeside’s history have been submitted.

A planning application for prior notification of demolition for John Summers High School In Queensferry has been received by Flintshire Council’s planning department - though the associated documents have not been made available to the public as yet.

In July last year the Leader reported on the final time the school shut its doors.

The closure had been ratified in August 2016 by Kirsty Williams AM, the Welsh Cabinet Secretary for Education – after it was decided the facility was no longer viable.

Queensferry ward cllr David Wisinger, a former governor at the school, told the Leader: “We campaigned to save it on a number of occasions and we succeeded twice.

“But we were told that unless pupil numbers increased the school would have to close. We fought to keep it open on the grounds that the number might increase - but unfortunately they didn’t.

“It was very sad for the area when the school closed and people were not happy about it.

“But now that it is closed we have security there which is costing a fortune and it is a risk for fires - so the sooner it is demolished, the better.

“It will be a very sad day for the community when it is demolished - it is a part of the history of Deeside and a lot of children have gone on from that school to have very good jobs.

“My children went to John Summers and they got good results - we were very pleased with it.

“I was concerned as there were rumours that houses could be built there so I asked the leader of Flintshire Council, cllr Aaron Shotton, in a council meeting what would happen to the land.

“He told me they are going to leave it as a green open space and a recreational space for children.”

Flintshire Council has been approached for a comment about the plans.
