AN ENTERPRISE gardening project suffered damage to their community greenhouse after an act of vandalism over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Digging Deeside, a project run by community enterprise RainbowBiz, suffered damages to one of their greenhouses at allotments in Mill Lane, Connah's Quay at about 10am on Monday.

It is believed a brick was thrown from outside the site shattering four panes of glass.

Digging Deeside seeks to help vulnerable people through bringing them together in a series of gardening projects.

With 35 registered people, the group hopes to promote equality and diversity by helping those who may not socialise regularly.

This is the latest in a spate of instances of vandalism and theft that has affected Digging Deeside over a number of years.

Sue Oliver, a director at RainbowBiz, is calling for better security measures to prevent future acts of vandalism.

She said: ''It's very upsetting. We need better security on the site, we need cameras and locked gates. I'm calling on Connah's Quay Town Council to take steps to provide funding in order to make the allotments more secure.''

But Sue is keen to stress that such incidents do not alter RainbowBiz's unwavering commitment to the project.

She added: ''Some of these volunteers struggle to even get out of the house, and we're not going to give up on such an important project.

''We exist to promote equality and diversity and our regulars need this project. We will keep this project going until people don't want it anymore.''

Sarah Way, project facilitator for Digging Deeside, has concerns for the safety of its already vulnerable members after the latest act of vandalism.

She said: ''It's a usually a really safe environment, but incidents like this can create an atmosphere of suspicion that we really don't want.

''Our vulnerable members often come down here on their own, and if they'd have been in the greenhouse when the brick was thrown, it could have been really nasty.''

Steve Goodrum, Connah's Quay Town Council clerk, said: ''Obviously any vandalism is very disappointing and unwanted, and the council are still looking at appropriate steps to improve site security.

''The object was thrown from outside of the site so we will need to examine the area in question to see what reasonable steps can be taken to help deter this kind of mindless act.''

North Wales Police have confirmed that an investigation into the damage is under way, and people with information can contact North Wales Police by dialling 101. The crime reference number which is 18300053494.
