VISITORS are flocking to Wrexham as new statistics reveal numbers coming into the town are on the increase.

At this month’s meeting of Wrexham’s Town Centre Forum, the council’s business services manager Amanda Davies revealed that footfall in the town was up a massive 21.8 per cent on last year.

She said that footfall counters, including a new one on the High Street, are helping to give the authority a more accurate impression of visitor.

“This year, the data shows footfall is up by 21.8 per cent”, she said.

“The last Saturday of the month tends to be our busiest day of the month.

“Obviously the snow impacted on week nine of the year in March, but every other week is peaking 50 per cent on last year.”

Ms Davies added that February alone had seen more than 300,000 people visit the town and more again in March.

Dave Cupit, operations manager of the new arts and cultural hub Ty Pawb said initial estimates showed there were at least 10,000 people through the doors of the revamped former People’s Market last Bank Holiday Monday, the official opening day.

He said: “It was shoulder to shoulder. Last Saturday evening we had a series of Welsh language bands performing and 350-400 people here. Week one has been extremely successful.”

He added that some market traders had commented that they had enjoyed their best weeks trade, “at any market”, last week.

Mr Cupit said that all ‘flexible spaces’ at Ty Pawb has been booked up for the Focus Wales festival in May, with a number of bands lined up to play, and talks are also taking place with Visit Wales about putting on a locally sourced food event there.

An event for World Record Store day will also be held there on April 21.

Ty Pawb’s first Community Thursday saw 120 to 130 children attend for craft events, and the hub has also taken on an additional 15 volunteers including four German exchange students.

Chair of the town centre forum, Alex Jones added: “It’s a great asset to have in the town and people should get behind it.”
