A DIAMOND couple have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary surrounded by four generations of family.
Tom and Hilda Buffey, of Cefn Mawr, met 62 years ago at the village youth club, after Hilda’s minister told her “lots of nice young men” went along.
And sure enough, in the winter of 1948 she met the love-of-her-life and future husband Tom.
Within a year they were engaged and just before Christmas 1950 they finally made their vows.
Tom and Hilda were delighted to celebrate the diamond anniversary of that special day with a party at the Telford Inn, Trevor, and were joined by 60 of their nearest and dearest from Johnstown, Oswestry and further afield.
Hilda said: “Our children had blown up giant copies of our wedding photos and it was really lovely to look at them again and to remember that special day.
“It made us wonder where the years have gone.”
The party turned into a right royal knees-up as a congratulatory card from the Queen arrived and Tom took to the stage to serenade Hilda with a personal rendition of When your old wedding ring Was New.
The happy couple, both 80, have four children, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who all managed to make their way to the party despite the poor weather.
Hilda said: “We had an absolutely marvellous time.
“It was great to see some old friends and the family.
“I think the great-grandchildren enjoyed it most of all, especially the music.”
Shortly after the couple got married Tom had to leave his love behind while he fulfilled his national service duties – the couple were separated for two years on and off.
But since then they have hardly spent a day apart.
Hilda said: “We’re so used to each other now we know exactly what the other is thinking.”
