SUPPORT workers in Flintshire say they have been swamped with calls about a controversial street drug.

Staff at the county’s young people’s drug and alcohol Team have been fielding countless enquiries from young people, parents, and professional about mephedrone, a currently legal drug.

Last week a Leader investigation revealed the drug, also known as miaow miaow or M-cat, is being bought and sold on the region’s streets.

It is feared to have played a part in the deaths of Scunthorpe teenagers Louis Wainwright and Nicholas Smith, who were found collapsed after a night out last week.

YPDAT workers say the use of mephedrone has increased in ‘vast amounts’ in Flintshire, particularly among young people.

Manager Lesley Bayley said: “YPDAT have produced information for professionals, a parents’ leaflet and powerpoint presentations to be used in schools.

“This information has been distributed to head teachers, police, children’s services, youth services, health services including all GPs and A&E departments.

“Ongoing drug and alcohol education and awareness sessions are being delivered within Flintshire high schools and pupil referral units.”

Community leaders and worried parents have made repeated calls for the drug to be made illegal as soon as possible.
