Welsh troops to march through Wrexham town centre

PEOPLE will be able to welcome home Welsh soldiers from Afghanistan next week and make a positive contribution to helping casualties of the conflict.

The 1st Battalion Welsh Guards will be marching through Wrexham town centre on Thursday, March 25, to mark their return from Afghanistan where they served as part of 19 Light Brigade, based in Helmand province.

At the end of their parade they have been invited into the Guildhall where the Welsh Guards Association will be selling copies of the official music CD which is raising cash for Welsh Guardsman killed or injured in the Afghanistan campaign.

The CD, which has been produced by the online support group Welsh Guards Reunited, includes 14 tracks of Country and Western and traditional Welsh music.

One of the tracks, the famous Welsh air Myfanwy, was recorded by a former Welsh Guardsman from Wrexham, Henry Vaughn Jones.

His contribution is particularly poignant as he sang it at the wedding of Lt Col Rupert Thorneloe, commanding officer of the 1st Battalion, who was killed in Afghanistan last July.

The sale of the CD after the parade has been organised by Dave Webb, secretary of the North Wales branch of the Welsh Guards Association.

He said: “The aim of the CD is to raise £1 million by this September for the Welsh Guards Afghanistan Appeal whose patron is Prince Charles, the colonel of the regiment.

“The money will help to support the families of Welsh Guardsman killed or injured in Afghanistan.

“We are doing it through Welsh Guards Reunited, which is a good thing as there was no support network like this for members of the regiment who served in, say, the Falklands war.

“I will have a table selling copies of the CD, which is entitled Onwards and Upwards, for £10 from a table inside the Guildhall and I hope as many people as possible will support us.”

The soldiers will assemble at Hightown Barracks for inspection at 11am and begin their march at 11.30am.

They will parade from the Barracks along Kingsmill Road, Salop Road, Mount Street, Yorke Street, High Street, Hope Street, Queens Street, Queens Square and to the Guildhall.

The Mayor, Cllr Arwel Gwynn Jones, will take the salute in Hope Street at 11.45am.

Oh come on now tommy... you cannot blame the troops for political desisions... our boys and girls who are engaged in action should be supported.

I'm sure they'd be happy to tell you Tommy, if you have the courage to go up to them and ask!

It is the responsiblity of every human to question the morality of their actions.this isn't a second world war scenario where we were fighting fascism, this is a situation were our"brave boys and girls" are doing little more than protecting the intersest of a few neo-con oil giants..its an unjust and illegal invasion of another country where innocent men women and children have been killed.

tommy , our soldiers are doing the bidding of the masters...they are doing there jobs... but it was not there desision to go to war...they are following orders and are bound to now defend the innocent... blame for the desision should be placed on the heads of state....they should in most eyes face murder charges...and be hanged for treason....

Instead of posting a You Tube video, why don't you do some proper trawling around and watch a line of Afghan women hanging from a goalpost for daring to want to be educated or the lass sentenced to be kicked to death in the street. Watch them and then come back here and spout that 'innocence' rhetoric. You haven't a clue mate! So again, if you feel strongly about it, go and protest to their faces and come back here and tell us about how you got on.

Truth hurts - that hit the nail on the head. Tommy seems to be very good at criticising people from behind his keyboard

tommy it just proves some people have no sense or respect for others. THAT MEANS YOU MUPPET!!!!!!!!!!

My brother in law is an officer in the army. He went to Iraq 4 times and has been to Afghanistan twice. He had no choice as the army orders him to where they want him to go. He can't go AWOL. I do know he has seen some awful things there and that there are locals that appreciate the forces presence.

truth hurts....yeah spot on!!! and that kind of stuff goes on all over the arab world ,but I cant see the US and UK wanting to invade saudi!!!!! or for that matter Most of Africa...most of south America...the far east.China..the list is endless....boycott..keep reading the daily mail....greenflyer..what do you do other than post silly comments on the leader site...come on I'm waiting foir an answer.

  14. Posted by: tommy at 14:04 on 21 March 2010 Report

......and then there is the cost...any of you war supporters care to hazard a guess as to how much the invasion is costing.....

  15. Posted by: GBoycott at 16:24 on 21 March 2010 Report

Nobody is talking about cost tommy, trying to worm out of it are we? So are you going to be there on thursday to tell our soldiers 'they are taking part in an illegal invasion' and 'responsible for the deaths of innocent men women and children' as you put it.

  16. Posted by: tommy at 20:21 on 21 March 2010 Report

Geoff boyoclot..the cost to date of both the iraq and afghan invasion is so far enough to have opened 10 hospitals and keep them running for 20 years...no I wont be there on thursday I will leave the flag waving to the usual pillars of society like your good self.

yachydda - "... our boys and girls who are engaged in action should be supported" I really have one question - "Why?" If we show our support for the troops, the government will simply take that as support for the "war" itself.

  18. Posted by: Roland Cleth at 12:01 on 22 March 2010 Report

tommy's point as to the cost and what else could have been done with that money is, to my mind, the strongest argument against the "war". In a time of global recession, when British people are losing their jobs by the thousand, our govt. is spending billions on the other side of the world. How many jobs could have been saved if the money spent on the "war" had been used to support businesses/industries in our own country?

...and why do we have to go steaming in just because the President of America thinks it's a good idea? You don't see, say, Switzerland busting a gut to waste their money on America's war; or on "homeland security" having been stupid enough to make themselves a target for the religious nutters. It might just be accpetable if we were getting cheap oil, but fuel prices appear to be at their highest for an age.

  21. Posted by: yachydda at 15:16 on 22 March 2010 Report

Roland Cleth : I see your point.... its easy... you take your complaint and any feelings to the government...bombard them with e-mails, letters etc... I know they never listen... thats why we have peace marches...and the press... and bloggers like myself who are not afraid to speak out against them...as I and others do on a fairly regular basis...cont

... We dont like what has happened... we dont want to see our mates, friends, family being killed and we dont like injustice, and murder, yes in my opinion it is an illegal war and should never have happened.... use your vote to get them out... im just one voice.. dont blame our troops for this mess.

  23. Posted by: yachydda at 15:21 on 22 March 2010 Report

I think its also true to say that had our troops refused to go in before the war was started I like millions of others would have stood by them... Blairs words never rang true with most of us... his lies and those of government are still in force.

  24. Posted by: yachydda at 15:36 on 22 March 2010 Report

Cost you say is a justification of stopping the war.... but then we waste countless billions on being members of the so called European superstate...If our troops were to put down its arms and refused to fight, they would all be tried for treason... then what total anarchy ? civil war? be reasonable.

  25. Posted by: Roland Cleth at 15:43 on 22 March 2010 Report

yachydda - "...I think its also true to say that had our troops refused to go in before the war was started I like millions of others would have stood by them... " Yes, wouldn't it have been wonderful if Sir Michael Jackson had said "Thanks for appointing me Chief of the General Staff, Tony...now about this war, I'm not really convinced, you know. Have you got anything better than this dossier Alastair sent me...."

  26. Posted by: yachydda at 16:10 on 22 March 2010 Report

Roland Cleth : you know that when you join up you could be put into a war zone... and pay for it with your life...the political rights and wrongs do not come into it... unfortunatly they are an afterthought.

  27. Posted by: Roland Cleth at 16:22 on 22 March 2010 Report

yachydda - "...you know that when you join up you could be put into a war zone..." I just wonder how many of the poor souls over in Iraq and Afghanistan at the moment really thought about that when they signed up.

to tomm have you ever heard of the twin towers and people killed in london..comes to mind the taliban and osama bi laden may have been involved..so go to the barracks and ask our welsh herors what they think nof a missinformed plonker

  29. Posted by: tommy at 21:43 on 22 March 2010 Report

hi tommyrot....what had the invasion of Iraq to do with the twin towers?...would the london bombs had gone off if it wasn't for britain invading iraq/..blair and brown have grovelled at the feet of an american president whose objective was to secure the Iraqi oilfield for themselves..the same gangsters now want to run afghanistan so they can use it as a stepping stone for the invasion of Iran . Open your eyes as to what is really happening as opposed to what the Sun editorial tells you.

tommyrot - "...have you ever heard of the twin towers and people killed in london..comes to mind the taliban and osama bi laden may have been involved.." Sorry, tommyrot, but I'm afriad that is a load of rubbish. Yes, the twin towers was Al-Qaeda, but Al-Qaeda is nothing to do with Iraq (other than trying to assassinate Sadam). 7 July would never have happened if we hadn't stuck our noses in first and offered ourselves up as targets. I'm afraid I have to give tommy the points on this one.
