About 8,500 Toyota Prius cars are to be recalled in the UK because of a braking problem, it was announced today (Tuesday, February 9).
Part of a 400,000-vehicle recall worldwide, the UK recall involves the third generation of the hybrid electric-petrol Prius and affects models manufactured from last summer up to January 27 this year.
The Japanese car giant said the problem related to what it described as "inconsistent brake feel" during slow and steady braking on bumpy road surfaces.
Toyota GB said the recall would involve a software upgrade in the anti-lock braking system. The procedure will be carried out free of charge using standard equipment in use at all authorised Toyota service centres.
It will write individually to every owner or keeper in the next few days.
The latest announcement follows the recall of about seven million Toyotas worldwide, including about 180,000 in the UK, over problems with accelerator pedals.
Last week Toyota moved to reassure workers the recall of cars in the UK will not affect jobs at its Deeside plant..
Jobs at the site are already under threat after the firm announced a surplus of 750 posts across the UK.
But a spokesman for the plant told the Leader: “Production at the Deeside plant is not currently suspended. We hope there is not going to be an affect on jobs.
“We are still in the investigating stages and are currently treating the matter of production jobs and the recall of the cars as separate issues."
