A NORTH Wales MP is calling for the council to fill road salt bins across the county.
Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami wants Flintshire Council to restock the yellow roadside bins that have remained empty for weeks following an icy snap and a national grit shortage.
During a visit to the Badgers Walk estate in Connah’s Quay, Mr Tami inspected the bins for fresh salt.
He said: “In this part of Connah’s Quay residents had to abandon their cars for days on end because their streets went untreated.
"Now they need reassurance that the yellow bins will be refilled and that if more adverse weather comes our way, Badgers Walk will be treated.
“Across the county there is a need to ensure all yellow bins are filled with salt.
"In February of 2009 we had a difficult week of freezing weather and it is conceivable that we could see more snow this February.”
Last month council workers were reduced to spreading crushed concrete on roads and pavements as the grit levels ran critically low.
Mr Tami is now calling for the council to clear the deposits left behind.
He added: “They should be swept up once the icy conditions have passed.”
A spokesman for Flintshire Council said there was still insufficient resources to fill the salt bins.
He said: “Salt levels across the UK are still at critical levels. We only have several hundred tonnes of salt within the county which is enough to cover our priority road network for four days of precautionary gritting.
“Unfortunately we do not have sufficient stocks of salt yet to consider refilling salt bins.”
