Wrexham FC boss happy to settle for a point

DEAN SAUNDERS was not too despondent despite Wrexham failing to make the most of their scoring opportunities against Rushden and Diamonds last night.

Wrexham were held to a goalless draw at Nene Park following a much-improved second half performance.

Just one decent opportunity fell to Lamine Sakho in the first half but Wrexham carved out a host of chances after the break, and Saunders, who thought his side did enough to win, was pleased with the response from his players.

“I said to the players, if you are manager of one of these teams conceding three or four every week then you have got problems,” said Saunders.

“But we are a fraction away from getting it all right.

“We are not a million miles away, all the top teams we have played we have been better than, and once again today I thought we deserved to win.

“The point is a good point. Obviously we would have liked three points and second half I thought we totally dominated the game.

“I changed it around half-time. We were getting sunk back in on the edge of our box, Jamie McCluskey came on and we kept getting the ball in to him.

“I can’t complain, we have created the chances again and not took them. We did miss Gareth Taylor but he should be fit for Saturday.”

Wrexham, who returned to action following a lengthy absence with victory against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, would have recorded back to back league wins for the first time this season if they had taken those chances.

And Saunders could not believe Frank Sinclair’s close range effort following Silvio Spann’s cross hit both post and crossbar before rebounding to safety.

“I am disappointed we have not won with the chances we have missed there,” he added.

“The ball has hit the post and then the underside of the bar, Silvio Spann had hit a great ball in that has gone right across the face of the goal, and Obi Anoruo could have had a hat-trick when he came on. The goalkeeper has made three great saves front post.

“When that ball hits the inside of the post, the underneath of the crossbar and comes out, I am thinking ‘flipping heck, January 1 I thought our luck might have changed!"
